It’s Lonely out on Revis Island

December 1, 2009

It’s becoming very clear that Darelle Revis is the NFL’s top shut-down corner.  After a stellar performance on Sunday holding Carolina’s Steve Smith to 1 catch for 5 yards, intercepting 2 passes, one returned for a TD – It’s getting very lonely out on Revis Island for opponent’s top WR’s.

Here are the numbers for the WR’s Revis has matched up against this year. ..

Week Opponent Top WR Rec Yrds TD
1 Houston A. Johnson 4 35 0
2 New England R. Moss 4 24 0
3 Tennesee K. Britt 4 59 0
4 New Orleands M. Colston 2 33 0
5 Miami T. Ginn 2 57 1
6 Buffalo T. Owens 2 13 0
7 Oakland L. Murphy 4 58 0
8 Miami D. Bess 4 18 0
9 BYE
10 Jacksonville M Simms-Walker 3 49 1
11 New England R. Moss 5 34 1
12 Carolina S. Smith 1 5 0
35 385 3

***Update – Revis switched to Simms-Walker in second half – TD was not on him. (Thanks to Manish Mehta for this.)

These numbers alone are impressive to say the least, but keep in mind they may even better than they appear.  Revis does not cover the same WR on every play, the Jets play a little zone now and then, and then there are plays like the 50+ yard Ted Ginn TD play in week 5 where Revis was supposed to have over-the-top support from Kerry Rhodes.

awesome, but you still need to update the TD total to 2
