Jets Acquire Braylon Edwards

October 7, 2009

Adam Shefter of ESPN reported this morning that the New York Jets have acquired WR Braylon Edwards from the Cleveland Browns.   The Jets have reportedly given up WR Chansi Stuckey,  Special Teams Maven/LB Jason Trusnik and possibly their 3rd and 5th round 2010 draft picks.

This is a total Risk/Reward trade.  With Edwards recent off the field issues (trying to fight LeBron James’ posse) and recent on the field performance issues (Remember Justin McCareins?  Gulp…) this is a bit risky.  But what do we have to lose?  We aren’t giving up impact, irreplaceable players in Stuckey and Trusnik, and hey, we now have a stellar, stable defense here.  This allows us to take some risks here on Offense with Personnel moves.

And for those people who are drawing comparisons to Plaxico?   C’mon – there is a difference between a Diva and a Thug.  Diva’s get bad press, Thugs get boyfriends during incarceration.   I would put Braylon in the Diva category, if he was a thug that fight the othernight would have gotten a lot uglier.

So… looking pass the risk the possibility of a big reward has got to get you excited as a Jets fan.  In 2007, he had 1300 yards and 16 Touchdowns… Did you hear that?  That is 16 TD’s in one year.  That’s hard to do, here is a list of WR’s who have scored more than 15 TD’s in a season…

Randy Moss

Jerry Rice

Sterling Sharpe

Mark Clayton

Don Hutson

Elroy Hirsch

Bill Groman

Carl Pickens

Cris Carter

Art Powell

Terrell Owens

Muhsin Muhammad

Braylon Edwards

He is 1 of 13 Guys to score more than 16 TD’s in a season – and held amongst mostly hall of famers!  This guy’s ceiling is very, very high.   It will take a few weeks for him to learn the offense, etc… but I’m hopeful just running him deep will force safeties to stay out of the box and open up the run game, and take the pressure off of our young QB.

Diva is right and maybe this will be a good change for him, but how much time do you think the NFL will wait to suspend him if charges are filed against him in the LeBron Posse incident? I read that he punched a 130 lbs. guy. Not cool if that’s true…but maybe he had it coming to him. I remember when I was 130 lbs. in the 10th grade. I hung out with bigger guys so I was always the loud mouth and liked to start fights. Looking back I would have punched me right in the jaw.

I remember last year when Ellis was caught with weed in like November / December, and he wasn’t suspended until this September.
